SOUTH-WEST WATER CHOOSE WTW VARION TECHNOLOGY FOR AMMONIA & NITRATE MEASUREMENT
South-West Water has designated multiple sites for the installation of the WTW ammonia and nitrate ISE technology, to control the nitrification waste-water process. The decision follows a lengthy trial conducted by PPM engineers that concluded March 2012; used to compare instruments from a number of manufacturers to determine operational performance. The initial part of the evaluation included automatic compressed air cleaning of the sensor. PPM needed to design a bespoke cleaning head to protect the submersible sensors from ragging, which can be extremely problematic. Regular compressed air cleaning maintained the sensor without the need for regular operator intervention. Careful consideration was also given to the style of installation to ensure the sensor assembly could be simply removed from the process, for inspection and maintenance. The Varion ISE technology demonstrated, if correctly installed, that reliable measurement can be made directly in the liquor, enabling efficient process control. Ultimately, it is hoped that implementation of the Varion ISE technology will result in improved treatment and reduced energy use.
