Solar Powered Measurement

Off Grid Measurement

Sometimes it is not economically possible to install a permanent power supply to a water quality monitoring station and a solar powered system needs to be considered.

For applications where continuous measurement is required, PPM can provide an engineered water quality monitoring solution, powered by lead acid batteries with photovoltaic trickle charging. Depending upon the number of water quality sensors required, typically two PV solar panels would be installed onto a small concrete base alongside a small GRP enclosure containing the batteries, ancillary parts and instrumentation. The monitoring system would typically comprise one or two water quality instruments providing local displays and output signals, with sensors submerged in the adjacent sample stream. Measurement signals can be transmitted to the cloud using GSM communications for remote data access and display.

Monitoring of CSO, SUDS and Nutrient removal projects

The solar powered monitoring system can be designed specifically to meet the application requirements, to collect data on a selectable interval of time and identify unacceptable water quality, in real time. Depending upon the chosen GSM technology, threshold (concentration) alarm limits may be configured so the user can be notified when alarm limits are breached. Notification by e-mail or text message can be generated.

Installation of a solar powered water quality monitoring system close to Combined Sewer Outfalls (CSO) and surface water discharges, can be used to identify pollution in real time and to determine the frequency / duration of these events.

Monitoring of surface water discharges across large pavement areas during construction phases where ingress of cementitious material can affect water quality may be also beneficial.

Other environmental projects include monitoring of wetlands, rivers and lakes to gain a greater understanding of the nutrient loading affecting water quality or to monitor nutrient removal across reed beds.

Typically, one to four sensors are deployed depending upon the application and the parameters required. The following sensor technology is available:

  • Ammonium
  • Nitrate
  • UVT
  • Derived TOC/COD/BOD (application dependant)
  • CDOM / Chlorophyll a / Cyanobacteria / Rhodamine / Tryptophan
  • Conductivity
  • Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
  • ORP (Redox)
  • pH
  • Turbidity
  • Suspended Solids (MLSS)
  • Oil film detection
  • Oil in Water (PAH)
